League of Inveterate Poets

The out-of-context contextuality of a foolish sage

Inveterate Poets

By on February 23, 2009

lewisWe are inveterate poets. Our imaginations awake.
C. S. Lewis

I’m thinking now an alternative title for this blog might be “The League of Inveterate Poets”

[UPDATE: It was too good to pass up. This blog known for all of two days eponymously as "Foolish Sage" is now The League of Inveterate Poets. I've included the full context of the quotation on my "Context" page.]

    Mindy,

Many people have called me Foolish. I thought they were just being chummy and using my first name. Then I realized that they were using an adjective, not a proper noun. ;-)

And I automatically declare you and Brandon charter members of the League of Inveterate Poets–because you already have been for a long time.

Does that make us Leaguers? Inveterates? Invertebrates? No, that can’t be right — no one has accused me of being spineless lately. Anyway, I’ve been writing fiction all day, so I’m certain my imagination is awake.

How about we split the difference: Invetebrates

This reminds me (for some reason) that I need to add you to the blogroll here.

Invetebrates it is. And yes, you do! (See the spine?)

I like the concept Mark. I think this is a more creative and probably rewarding (i.e. less controversial) blog idea for you.

Reader-response Criticism is always an interesting thing to explore. Whether it’s a line or a book, all reading is recontextualized. The beauty of it is, we contribute to the meaning and writing of texts—including texts like the Bible—and this keeps reading fresh and tells us something about ourselves.

I’ve had a idea for starting a blog based on a favorite Lewis text of mine (and no, I don’t mean the Narnian Chronicles, though they are THE favorite), but I’ve been reluctant for some time now (in large part due to last year’s Westminster fiasco). I might have to reconsider.

Thanks, Brandon. Your second paragraph is exactly what I’m after.

I’d welcome seeing any new blog by you. Let me know if you pull the trigger.
