Pope Talks to the Rabbi Who Talks to Jesus
Taylor Marshall on Canterbury Tales Blog has a quick review of Pope Benedict XVI’s new book Jesus of Nazareth. Of particular interest to Westminster Theological Seminary students will be the Pope’s responses to the main points of Rabbi Jacob Neusner’s A Rabbi Talks to Jesus, required reading in Professor Stephen Taylor’s New Testament Introduction class.

Geza Vermes reviews it here:

…and for what it’s worth, I think Vermes has some good points, but is also unfair to Benedict XVI–particularly in quibbling that the Pope allowed his faith to influence his “critical” reading of the NT. What would we expect?

Waiting for my family to get dressed for church, I clicked on the Vermes review. Actually, better than his view on the Pope’s presuppositions is his thumbnail review of historical criticism and its successors. In a few paragraphs, he hits all the high points and provides helpful contextualization. For those of us who learned it for the exam and have since forgotten who is who, it’s a fine review.
