A year ago next week I finished Old Testament History & Theology II with Tremper Longman. Now many of my friends are taking part in Tremperfest: The Next Generation. In commiseration with them, I resurrect this “blast from the past” post. To see the comments of my readers to the original, go here.

This is totally insider, private joke stuff. Will only work if you’ve had the WTS OTHT2 course (or its equivalent elsewhere). Just a little Last Days Madness (aka finals season) humor for those WTS students struggling to get it all over.

While supposedly studying together for our Old Testament History & Theology II (aka “Tremper Longman’s Bibliography”) exam, some of us were struggling to get “deuteronomic” and “deuteronomical” off our tongues, let alone into our brains. This led to us proposing some other possible tracings of the influence of Deuteronomy on Joshua thru Kings:

• Deuteronomania: an obsession with finding deuteronomical historical references.
• Deuteronomonopoeia: all the references to “Babel” in the Old Testament
• Deuteronomaly: a deuteronomomic reference that just shouldn’t be there
• Deuteronomalicious: the attitude of opponents of the theory of deuteronomical history
• Deuteronomono! What Saul yelled as he lept onto his own sword.
• Deuterognome: little idol statues found on Israelite front lawns.
• Deuterognostic: a pre-pre-pre-Christian cult; responsible for every lie in The Da Vinci Code.
• Deuteronomocalifragilisticexpialidocious: If you say it loud enough, you might seem precocious!
• Deuteronomalignant: that sick feeling you have the day after your OTHT2 exam when you realize you left the most obvious points about DH off your exam essay.
• Deuteronomaniac: a DH geek.
• Deuteronomesticated: the condition of a former Deuteronomaniac who has just lost interest, to the extent that he no longer sends daily emails to his friends with the subject line: “Those Crazy Redactors, Look What They’re Up to Now!”
• Deuteronomolicious! That tasty sensation of being done forever with Old Testament History and theology!
