Welcome to the Conn-versation

Sacred Journey has been peacefully slumbering for the past couple of weeks. I’m decompressing after final exams and a month of way-too-much drama at Westminster Theological Seminary. This is also the time of year when I like to re-evaluate the purpose and future direction of this blog, so I’m spending some time giving that some thought.

In the meantime I’ve joined up with a project about which I’m very excited. Conn-versation (http://connversation.wordpress.com) is a new team blog dedicated to reviving and applying the legacy of the late Harvie Conn, professor of missions at Westminster. Harvie was a man ahead of his time; he was missional before missional was a word. And most amazingly of all, he was missional in a conservative Reformed context. As such he has become something of a teacher to many of us who feel drawn to the same trajectories he laid down, even though we may never have actually had a class with him. Through his writings and through some of our current WTS professors who seek to carry on his legacy, Harvie and his call to bring word and deed together to reach a lost world continue to inspire. However, it concerns us that his name and his teaching is little known to the rest of the Church and somewhat in danger of dying out even where he is known.

Therefore a group of my friends, mostly WTS current students or alum, have begun Conn-versation as a public conversation on themes inspired by Harvie Conn’s work. I invite you to ‘listen in’ as we do, and if you are ready to have the way you look at evangelism, the church, and your place as a Christian in God’s world all challenged to their core, read his stuff.

Thanks bro. I love Keller and know that he has been influenced a lot by Conn. I recently bought his little book on evangelism. Where else should I start?

    Hi Mark,

This is totally unrelated to your post (my apologies), but I wanted to wish you guys a happy new year and to say thanks for your blog.

    Best,

Mark - just noticed a new “surrejoinder” from Beale to Enns over at Reformation 21. Just wanted to let you know in case you haven’t seen it.

    Have a good new year!

Mark…I ordered “Evangelism: Doing Justice and Preaching Grace” and “Urban Ministry: The Kingdom, the City and the People of God” from WTS a couple of weeks ago. I look forward to reading them both! Harvie Conn came as a highly recommended read from a friend…especially as I dive into teaching an evangelism/missional class when I return to Ireland.

Hope you enjoy them! We’ve just opened up the Conn-versation blog to comments from non-members, so after you’ve read the books, let us know what you think.
