I feel like any mention of Peter Enns should include a mention of Sam Boyd since, let’s face it, Enns just rides on the tails of Boyd’s proverbial trenchcoat, as it were … - samboydfans.blogspot.com founder.

    Matt,

I talked to Sam about this issue. At one time he would have demanded his due credit for having ghost-written Pete’s address. But since every major university in the English-speaking world got into a bidding war over having Sam do his post-grad with them, he no longer feels he needs this small-time adulation.

For anyone who’s seen his photo, they must think he has something to do with the DaVinci Code.

I guess it was a very limited time, eh? Cause the link don’t work for me.

  5. Peter Says:

For those following the continuing debate on Inspiration and Incarnation should note that D.A. Carson has published a review which appears in the currant issue of Trinity Journal and is also posted at Reformation 21.

This review needs to be read carefully and cannot be dismissed easily.

  7. Sam Says:

Dr. Enns did egregiously forget to mention his thanks for my superb powerpoint skills, without which the speech would have suffered tremendously. Once again, my coattails feel heavy.

    this link isn’t working.

  9. Mark Traphagen Says:

    Link is fixed.

  10. Hmmm Says:

So Mark, having told us why Helm was so wrong on your friend Enns, are you going to do the same with Carson?

  11. Brandon Withrow Says:

Thanks for posting the link. I’ll have to add it to my blog. Feels like we’re playing link tag now. I’m surprised they were able to get it online so quickly. I’m guessing that another version will eventually appear at findarticles.com where TJ’s journals are put online.

  12. Mark Traphagen Says:

So Mark, having told us why Helm was so wrong on your friend Enns, are you going to do the same with Carson?

“And the Sage answered him, saying, ‘Answer me why you comment on my blog with a fake email address, and then I will tell you by what authority Carson makes his pronouncements.’”

  13. Mark Traphagen Says:

To all those hitting page refresh every five minutes to see if I’ve published another seven page response to the latest Enns critic:

We’re into the final days of class for this semester and then exams, so I really can’t give the Carson article the attention I’d need to right now. I wouldn’t be able to put in the kind of effort that I did on the Helm response until after exams (mid May). Perhaps someone else will pick up the baton. Or perhaps the world will just continue and God remain on his throne without my response.

Folks, despite recent appearances, this is not the headquarters of the Peter Enns Antidefamation Conspiracy Effort (PEACE). Critics will continue to pick at the book like a chicken bone. Meanwhile, people in the real world will continue to be helped by it. The sun will come up tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar. Or read Psalm 19.

Has anyone noticed that Mark has just been baited?

I predict that Mark will have a tough time with Dr Carson’s review, and not just because of the respect and stature and gratitude that Dr Carson is due in our community.

But let me please direct this response to Mr Hmm, and may God please give me the grace that He gave Mark in responding charitably:

Mark has shown that he has an issue with anger and he has publicly repented. Are we to expect that from within the Body of Christ that you will now will come to provoke him to this sin again as if it was sport? If you are not in The Body, I am at a loss to understand your interest in this site—however, If you are, we are all shamed.

I’m protecting my own heart now as I write, and I am seeking to protect Mark’s. Let me try to do the same with you. For the literal sake of our Savior, let’s all please take a step back and remember Whose we are, OK?

My apologies for not posting my email last night.

My concern here is that the weight of evangelical scholarship appears to be lining up against I & I and this calls for a response from those who think it is a good book. I’m glad the book has helped some folk, the question however remains is it orthodox?

“Critics will continue to pick at the book like a chicken bone. Meanwhile, people in the real world will continue to be helped by it.”

    Mark:

I am sympathetic to your pre-finals plight (heck, it’s my own, too) but I would add this to your comment above: some people in the real world are helped by the book, but others are troubled by it. That’s why it’s good for critics to pick at it. In my opinion, Carson puts his finger on some rather troubling or unhelpful aspects of the book and provides useful correctives in those areas. And let’s face it, Enns has asked for it. He wants conversation, and he’s getting it. He wants people reading the Bible in context, and some of Carson’s comments are along those lines.

  17. Peter Says:

    David.

Your point is well taken. Peter Enns clearly says in the book that he wanted conversation.

I do wonder if he expected the Carson’s of the world to come out so strongly against his work. It will be interesting to see if there are other such reviews and equally interesting to see if scholars of equal stature to Carson come out in support of the book.

At the end of the day what the critcs think doesn’t make the book true or untrue. What is important is each of us deciding if the book is biblical and reflective of reformed thought.
