Don Miller on Sleep
OK, I’m going to get annoying with the Don Miller quotes pretty quickly, but let me get one more in. Just one more, I promise! Miller is one of those writers who every so often pulls off a paragraph that you just have to read out loud to someone. Normally that duty falls on my LSW (Long Suffering Wife), but she’s way too deep into something called a “pericope” right now for me to interrupt her. She’s not happy when I make her lose which disjunctive-waw she was pondering. So you get the quote:
…there aren’t many pleasures I enjoy more than sleep. I sleep until I am done, normally, and haven’t set an alarm in years. I’m not lazy, mind you, I just find it odd anybody would program a machine to wake them. God made the brain so it would wake on its own, and as a follower of Jesus, I am strictly adherent to His system. Call me a fundamentalist if you want.
Back when we were still homeowners, I was this way about leaves. While all the other guys spent hours raking their lawns, I decided that there was something sacreligious about me trying to fight nature’s way. Besides, soon enough the snow would come and we wouldn’t even be able to see the leaves for months (this was in upstate New York). And in the spring, the decaying leaves served as natural mulch, saving us a lot of money. This all made a great deal of sense to me. See, it’s a good thing I didn’t share this with Karyn after all, because somehow that never made any sense to her.

You forgot to mention your “melt” method of snow removal.

Which has worked every spring for as long as I can remember.

I’m sure neither God nor UPS mind that those of us who hold down jobs program a machine to wake them!

I didn’t use my waking machine on Saturday. It was wondrous. I wish I could have the same today.

Actually, later on in that chapter Miller learns through his mentor that getting up and going to your job can be a form of worship.

Mark: I’m with you. [Of course, this also explains why I bought a townhouse in a neighborhood where the HOA does the yardwork. :)]
Exactly. It’s all about being a professional. Being a professional is doing your job when you don’t want to do it. Cheerful obedience, etc.

“Cheerful obedience”
Is there any other kind? (If not, then I’m in big trouble when it comes to getting up for work!)

Come over to my house some morning, Jason, and hear me mumble and complain about having to go in to work.
