Enns: A Theology of…Sports?
One of my favorite pieces of dialogue from Fiddler on the Roof occurs during the song “Tradition.” The village rabbi teaches the men that “there is a prayer for everything.” One of the men asks incredulously, “Rabbi, even for the Czar?”
“Yes,” replies the rabbi, “Lord, bless and keep the Czar….far away from us!”
My next favorite rabbi, Dr. Peter Enns of Westminster Theological Seminary, probably also believes there is a prayer for everything. At least he says we need to have a theology for everything…including sports! See his article “Loving Christ While I Cheer for the Yankees” in the most recent issue of By Faith, the magazine of the Presbyterian Church of America.
My prediction is that Enns’s support of the Yankees may prove more controversial than his stance on inspiration. Somewhere, even now, there is an OPC pastor writing “Enns has stepped outside the bounds of the Cooperstown Confession.”

Thanks for posting that, Mark. Great article! While I’ll have to forgive Dr. Enns for cheering for the Yankees (go Cubs!), I appreciate the thought he’s put into the theological aspects of being a sports fan.
