A Question of Balance

Karyn's rock sculptureMy LSW has a new obsession. Was it enough that she has mad skillz in physics, Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, violin, graphic design, illuminated calligraphy, mountain climbing, running, bicycling? Apparently not. Not while one stone remains not upon another.

After seeing the web site of Bill Dan, she has picked up the odd art of rock balancing. The picture at right is an example of one of her “installations” which drew double takes on the Westminster Seminary campus today, at least until the autumn winds grew too bold. These on-the-spot sculptures are built with no glue, no cement, just gravity and physics.

You can see more pictures of her work on her blog. And here are some miniature examples.

She didn’t even have those pictures up for 24 hours when the webmaster of Bill Dan’s site discovered them. Karyn’s work is now displayed on his site.

Somehow I imagine that when Mark and Karyn wake up in the morning, Mark says to Kayrn, “What are we going to today, LSW?” and she replies, “Same thing we do every day, Mark, TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!”

  2. Mark Traphagen Says:

Actually, it isn’t that dramatic. More like “Who gets the shower first?”

That is very cool. Makes me want to find some rocks!

It’s tricky, Matthew. Karyn pulls it off because she has so much more patience than me. Last night I accomplished my first successful balance sculpture with four small rocks I collected on the slopes of Pike’s Peak. I was so proud and called Karyn in to see. She smiled and said, “Well, that’s a nice pile.”

    Rock balancing … Web 2.0.

    Rock balancing … Web 2.0.

    Karyn wins again.

  6. Karyn Says:

Actually, I said “stack”…. get with the lingo!

  7. Keith Says:

So my question is: how does one go about learning to do this? I mean, I understand the physics of it, but having the eye to look at an oddly-shaped rock and think if an odd way it can stand upright? Some of those photos are fascinating.

  8. Mark Traphagen Says:

Keith, I’ll defer to Karyn for your instruction…apparently I only know how to “stack”
