It Takes an Atheist…
…to nail traditional liberal Christianity dead on. This quote is from atheist Brian Fleming’s reflections on a debate he had with “a mix of conservative Christians, liberal Christians and freethinkers.†He didn’t like any of the Christian positions, but singled out the liberals for special comment:
Liberal Christianity, despite being non-hateful and on many issues even ethical, is hopelessly incoherent, however. Liberal Christianity says a perfect God wrote a perfect book—but he made mistakes. Or, alternately, liberal Christianity says the book is an extremely flawed and even disgusting work written by men—but special attention should still be paid to it. Liberal Christianity says religion shouldn’t stand in the way of science—but a dead man did really rise from the dead. Probably. Or, at least, it’s not unreasonable to believe that he did (or that he turned water into wine and walked on water). Liberal Christianity says the love of Jesus is the only way to Heaven—but if some people don’t believe that, it’s fine to let their deluded souls go off to Hell without even trying to stop them. Or maybe Heaven and Hell don’t exist at all—but it’s still very, very important to praise this figure called “God.†For some reason.

I’m going to respond to this, Mark, but I’m going to do it on my blog out of respect. I’m going to assume I have your permission to reprint this in its entirety as the introduction to my response. If that’s not cool, PM, IM, TM, or call me and I’ll take it down.
THe problem with my plan, however, is that I don’t yet have a response. So I’m going to go outside and smoke a cigarette. It’s been the general pattern of my recent life that, by the time I’ve smoked one cigarette (or two on the REALLY tough problems), I have an answer to whatever seemingly unsolvable intellectual problem I face.
Oh, and keep up the good work. Poor writers like me read your blog and dream to write so well.
