Species of Nerds at WTS

My classmate Kyle gets it bang on in this post. I know all these people. I may even be married to one of them :ducks:

    He’s got me right. I’m a Vos scholar . . . of the . . . first . . . ord . . . oh forget it, I couldn’t even fool myself.

  2. Mark Traphagen Says:

Really, Jason? I for sure had you pegged as a Hebrew nerd

upon reflection, I have discovered that if I am not a nerd I am a different type of annoyance. I can’t parse a hebrew verb but I will stay up late at night contemplating how Ruth (from the book of Ruth) might follow behind harvesters and both carry and, at the same time, pick up and bundles of gleaned wheat- excuse me- barley- and then email the instructor with my speculations.

    “the instructor” has great discretion.

and now for something completely different.

all this aside I have been wondering lately about how it reflects/ does not reflect upon a student/ faculty population that appears to take no interest in social issues. Incredibly low attendance at daily worship - no discussion regarding Darfour or the chocolate slave trade or any number of other things about which I am shamefully clueless…

These are not “my things” either and I am wondering why they are not. Can we afford to be so “right on” theologically and so “nowhere” socially?

Have I just embarrassed myself? Have I just revealed msyelf as an alternate species of nerd? Should I acquire a pseudonym? Should I find a different blog?

Criminy- how have I chosen to say this during finals week?

    yours truly

In response to johneddy, or Roseanne, or whoever… :)
I agree that the campus population (myself included) is not where it needs to be regarding social issues…however, one (very small step) in the right direction was taken last semester when Roth and Gabriella started a “Christians and Politics” discussion group (it currently meets about every other Thursday at lunchtime). We’ve had a good range of discussion/education/debate on various social and political issues. Also, there’s been talk of having a “Christians and Politics” course, though i’ve yet to see it in the catalog…i think we should lobby for it.
Anyway, there’s my two cents…next time i see ya, could you fill me in on what the “chocolate slave trade” is? This might jeopardize my ability to eat M&M’s without guilt… :)

    Justin:

I only discovered the political discussion group at the very end of the term. Hope it continues next year!

    Justin-
Its much better that we talk than that I leave cryptic rants.
Thanks for the info on the thursday group. I will ask if I can join in next yr

    as per chocolate: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/1272522.stm

Btw the only way I found out about this is that a restaurant my wife and I go to stopped serving chocolate.

  7. Mark Traphagen Says:

Wow, John, thanks for the info about the chocolate. I had no idea.

“They are a husband-and-wife duo who are taking Westminster by storm. I think they are in the running for being named co-rookies of the year, with Karen taking a slight edge for being a Hebrew monster and actually participating in the WTS “talent show.” This may mark the first time since Wayne Grudem that a BAPTIST has achieved such an honor.”

  9. Mark Traphagen Says:

Michaela’s quote was from Kyle’s blog post…as I commented there, I was in the talent show as well, but either I was quickly forgotten by dear Kyle, or he is implying that I was not actually the “talent” part of the talent show
