The Internet Monk
I’ve just discovered a fellow Traveler who seems to be, if not on the same highway as me in his Sacred Journey, at least on a parallel route. Michael Spencer, aka the Internet Monk, is a refreshing and snappy (and opinionated!) writer.
I appreciate Mr. Spencer’s take because, much like my wife and I, he’s “been there, done that” in the world of American evangelicalism, and he doesn’t cringe to let you see his t-shirt collection. All that weary traveling has provided him with some accumulated wisdom and entitles him to the occassional well-meant rant. A great example is his post “A Contrarian Manifesto for the Church Growth Debate.” I would’ve stood and cheered, but my wife was trying to sleep a few feet away.
Hard to choose just one excerpt to whet your whistle, but here goes:
I don’t care about the Purpose-Driven Church, the Emergent Church, the Seeker Church, The Church-Growth Church or any other trendy moniker. I’m into the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. If baby boomers want their own church, with everything done their way so they don’t have to share with the rest of Christianity, fine. Go have your play date. I’m hanging with the big dogs of Christian history and passing on the hot dogs of American evangelicalism.
Oh, I should mention that he is a working pastor in a real local church, so he’s not ranting from outside the gates.
I don’t agree with him on everything. For one, he’s a little more politically committed than I care to be. But I will be a regular reader.
