Praying your IOUS

A follow up to last night’s post about prayer….

A beautiful prayer in the middle of a a post by Sarah Jane reminded me of John Piper’s little mnemonic for how he begins his daily prayers, using the letters IOUS:

I: Incline my heart to your word. (Ps. 119:36)

O: Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things. (Ps. 119:18)

U: Unite my heart to fear your name. (Ps. 86:11)

S: Satisfy me in the morning with your steadfast love. (Ps. 143:8)

What a great way to pray the Scriptures in a way pleasing to God!

Some of Paul’s prayers are my favorites!

I agree, Julie. In the class I mentioned in yesterday’s post, we analyzed some of Paul’s prayers. He did make “situational” prayer requests, such as asking for what we call “traveling mercies,” but by far his prayers have to do with who God is making us on the inside.
