Study: Unpatched PCs compromised in 20 minutes - News - ZDNet

According to this study, anyone plugging a new Windows XP computer into the Internet can expect the system to be compromised by malware (malicious software downloaded to a user’s computer without his/her knowledge) within the first 20 minutes.

The Internet Storm Center has published a guide to protecting your new computer that tells what every user should do in the first minutes connected to the Internet.

I may be biased (ok, I am) but I think that the cost of the extra time for downloading patches, constant vigilance for virus definitions and malware, and lost productivity might more than even the playing field for the extra cost to have a Mac (which don’t have nearly the amount of trouble with such things as the PC world). Just my opinion.

Yikes! I’ll have to remember that when/if my personal PC gets plugged in.

BTW…in case anyone wonders…”Sweets” refers to the poster of the penultimate comment in this thread, not to the ultima!

So, Rog….unless Karyn comments here again, you are now officially the “Sweets” of this post. Congratulations.
