Please pass the Crayolas
OK, let’s come clean….no matter how much you tell other people that you are going to seminary very aware that “seminary does not have all the answers”….you secretly believe that you are indeed going to be let in on the inside track, that somewhere pretty early on in your studies you will cry out with ecstasy as the Bible and the full counsel of God suddenly become as clear as the water in your Brita pitcher.
And then they start you with basic Greek…
…where after the equivalent of half a semester, you are writing–in the same language that contained the inspired words of St. Peter and St. Matthew–sentences such as…
“The disciples and the apostles go into the house of the servants”
and
“The prophets are knowing the gospel but the disciples are taking the servants to the house of the apostles.”
or today’s very disturbing…
“The servants were killing the children with the disciples.” (I did not make that up; see Machen’s New Testament Greek for Beginners, p. 98.)
I’m 47 years old, I’m in one of the most prestigious seminaries in the land, and I’m writing sentences that should be illustrated with fingerpaints.
So add that to my list of things to be thankful for from yesterday….for every opportunity for the crushing of my pride. May all those many opportunities result in a bowing before the One Who Knows.
