Free Parking

In Calvin Trillin’s quirky novel Trepper Isn’t Going Out, Murry Trepper decides to devote his life to retaining a coveted parking spot by moving into his car and refusing to leave. From the front seat of his auto, Murray develops a whole way of viewing the world…or at least New York City.

Entrance to our apartment blockToday after returning from class, I decided to park on the street near our apartment building. What a momentous choice, you say (and don’t think I don’t notice that sarcasm dripping off your chin)! The choice only had meaning as a choice because we pay $30 a month to rent our own garage in this complex. Therefore, it seems natural that I would park in the garage, if for not other reason than to get my money’s worth.

But today is a strikingly beautiful day. I’ve discovered since moving here to Philadelphia that both Philly and Charlottesville have humid summers…with the difference that Philly actually has some days with low humidity. And this is one of those days. So I decided to park on the street because between the street and our apartment is the beautiful little stone bridge pictured to the left. This bridge crosses a delightful babbling creek.

And I guess my only point is that sometimes just a little thing like changing your parking spot can be worth the bother. Sometimes you just need to change the view.

“humidty”….you mention this thing twice in your entry. What is this strange new discovery? I have no knowledge of this term.
