And there’s the kickoff…
Guess I’ll start this blog by presenting the post from the Caedmon’s Call Rumor Forum that got me here. When Geof, that board’s beloved Tyrant saw this post, he commanded me to begin a blog. I hear and I obey…
After three snow days in a row, this is how bored I am.
I’m watching the Sopranos (3rd season) on DVD. There’s a scene where Tony get’s pulled over for speeding and tries to buy off the cop, but the cop doesn’t take.
Now I have to let you know that I spent my formative years in north NJ. The outside scenes of Sopranos are literally filmed on the streets where I lived. Almost every episode when they’re driving, I know exactly where they are.
So Tony calls a mob-friendly assemblyman to get the ticket fixed. Later on, Tony runs into the cop who is moonlighting (at the actual Fountains of Wayne, btw) because he was reassigned to a non-overtime position.
Now here’s where my anal retentiveness and boredom collide…Tony teases the cop by calling him the “scourge of Cedar Grove.” Now this gives me a cheap thrill for a moment….Cedar Grove is the home town of yours truly and my LSW (Long Suffering Wife). I’ve been waiting for three seasons for someone to mention Cedar Grove. The Sopranos live in North Caldwell, one town away to the north. Tony’s shrink’s office is in Montclair, the next town to the east. And the shrink lives in Essex Fells, just to the west. So I’m having my little party over hearing my little town’s name on a hit show.
And then it hits me. Something ain’t right. What is it…something is nagging at my subconcious. I back up the DVD to the traffic ticket scene. I start watching where Tony is driving…out his window I see familiar strip malls…BINGO! Rte. 46 just west of the Willowbrook Mall (where Carmela Soprano shops, btw).
Now comes the truly anal part. I’ve gotta confirm this…because Rte. 46 does not pass through Cedar Grove. At the closest, it’s over a mile away from the town border. But I’ve got to confirm this error. Now I inch the DVD frame by frame. As Tony pulls off the road in response to the cop’s siren, you can see an exit sign off in the distance. Using the zoom control on the DVD remote, I go all the way in. The letters are blurry, but it’s unmistakable…the exit is for “Two Bridges Road” and “Lincoln Park.” I know exactly where they are!!!
So why does Tony call the cop the “scourge of Cedar Grove” when, if he was a CG cop, he’d be at least five miles out of his jurisdiction?
I have found my first continuity error. I can die in peace.

Only you, Mark. Only you.

If I was more familiar with the area just north of where I live, I probably could have found some continuity errors in the episode where Tony takes Meadow for a college visit. As it was, I just thought it was cool to hear a New Jersey mobster talking about driving down 295 in Maine.

Even better with the map, Mark.
